Magazine Evaluation

I got the inspiration for my magazine from NME music magazine, I decided to use NME magazine as on my questionnaire most people decided that, that was their favourite magazine. So being the public favourite magazine I decided to use that as my guide line. I like the fact that NME’s magazine is very full and jam packed with text and images. Even though I got my inspiration from NME for my front cover I did not get my double page spread inspiration from there, I got it from Vogue. I kept the double page spread very simple with one side just being a picture of my sex symbol and on the other page a full page interview, a large title and a subheading. The reason why I did this was because what I made the main character talk about was very touching. I made the front cover of my magazine simple but made it look busy, to do this I distorted the colour to make it multi coloured instead of a simple photograph. This made the front cover look very eye catching and interesting things that continue in the magazine to make my audience interested to carry on reading it. I researched into what would attract a female audience and I chose to use a sex symbol for the front cover, I tried to keep the layout similar to the way NME laid there magazine out as I really liked this. The front of my magazine is a photograph of a good looking boy on a bike, this alone will attract a female audience. I have distorted the picture to be in all different types of colours rather than a normal photograph because this is very eye catching.

I made the title of my magazine up my self and named in “Babylove“, I got the inspiration for this from the pop song “Baby Love” by Nicole Scherzinger, originally I was going to make a indie magazine but I changed my idea as I could not relate to a indie magazine and I found it very hard to know what to write about and as people voted they prefer mostly pop music, there was no point in me doing one on indie. Pop is known as a “normal” group, anyone can like pop music, being “indie” is known slightly as “unusual” and I found this very hard to relate to.

To attract my female audience I just used a good looking sex symbol for the front cover and girly things that they may be interested in reading. Doing a music magazine was quite hard work as it involved a lot of research, most music magazines are aimed at a male audience, so changing it round as going against the media and making it a female audience was tricky. I had to find out what it was that woman were interested in such as boys, fashion etc so I could add this to my magazine as a topic.

Making a magazine taught me how to use Adobe Photoshop 5.0 and how to take good photographs.  I never realised how many tricks there are when using Photoshop and how useful it can be to me in the future. Being able to use Photoshop is a good skill to have as it is not used for just making magazines; it is a lot more professional than Paint.

From looking back at my previous task of my school magazine I do not believe I have achieved a great deal. I do believe however that I have improved my Photoshop skills massively and I feel a lot more confident using it now than before. I aimed both of my magazines at a female audience as I find this so much more easier to do, I also feel it a lot better if you can relate to something and being a teenage female I know what teenage females like and do. If I could change my magazine I would have liked to make the front cover more like a Vogue front cover, nice and simple, less is more type. This way it could look clean and fresh rather than a big jumble.

Grand Theft Auto Analysis

Rockstar Games franchise have had a breakthrough with the gaming industry, not only can you buy Xbox games in stores and play them on your Xbox as normal, now as from the 17th February, you can download them online and play them straight from your Xbox.

This idea of being able to download a game online will save many problems with faulty and damaged disks. This idea will also be used more and more and possibly even get rid of the classic idea of having to go out and buy one in a shop. However being able to do this means that there could quite possibly be a decrease in the price of video gaming as this is a cheaper and greener version.

Grand Theft Auto is very much a game for young men and older boys, the content is highly explicable and very much focused on gangs and gang culture. Grand Theft Auto has been given a 18 certificate, therefore it is not suitable for anyone under 18 years of age.

On the front of the advertisement there is a rather large black man holding a gun, i can instantly see that this has something to do with gang culture and violence. There is also other pictures of young thug like looking men on motorbikes, holding guns, fighting and dealing drugs. This instantly spells trouble, however this sort of theme is aimed at only one gender in particular. Young men and older boys. On the advertisement there is very little writing explaining the game and i think this is because Grand Theft Auto is so popular that once you have played all the other games to death you are not interested anymore and need to move onto something else like the next game. The people that are attracted to this type of game are not interested in knowing what it is about, they know it’s going to be good from previous games all they need to see is images from the game even if they know nothing about it. Young men also like the image of being big and matcho so playing this game makes them feel like that and as you are not able to walk around with a gun or deal drugs legally, being able to do it virtually is a thrill and as it is so realisic it feels like you are being this character anyway. All young boys would like to be or have the power like this man on the front, centre of the page.

5 Minute Drama Analysis

Eastenders

Camera work: At the beginning there is a three shot of Tony, Bianca and Tiffany in the kitchen icing the cake this is to set the scene and see what everyone is doing, then when Tony begins to speak we see a medium shot of him, I think they have decided to use a medium shot so we can see his body language in response to the conversation. There is then a conversation between Tony and Bianca and then there is a over the shoulder shot, there is then a medium close up of Bianca’s face at the end of the conversation just to see her reaction and facial expression. That scene then cuts to Whitney sitting on her bed and a close up of a photo, her hand is on the photo and the camera tracks her hand up to her face here we see a close up because she is upset and to show her vulnerability.

Mise en Scent: At the very beginning before any conversation has taken place we see Ricky washing up at the sink and Bianca and Tiffany icing the cake, this makes it look more realistic and to show that they are “working class.” The conversation between Bianca and Tony is happening while Bianca is icing the cake and Tiffany ( a young girl ) is typically eating it and licking off the icing. In the background we see Ricky washing up. While Bianca and Tony are having there conversation Ricky is looking at the them and joining in while drying up. This scene is set in the kitchen, we can see that it is a typical working class house with lots of props such as salt and pepper on the table, cereal boxes on the kitchen work top and a bread bin. It is also Whitney’s birthday so there are birthday cards scattered around. In the next scene Bianca goes upstairs to talk to Whitney, she has a glass of wine in her hand that she sips while she is talking to her, Whitney’s room is a typical girl’s room with lots of photo’s on the wall and cosmetics on shelves, this makes it look more realistic.

Editing:Most of the edits in Eastenders are suppose to be non- diegetic, so we are not suppose to notice them or make it less obvious, this is too make it look real life. At the beginning there are lots of jump- cuts when someone is talking like when Tony and Bianca have there conversation in the kitchen, every time one of them spoke the camera would jump to see them. In the kitchen scene there are only jump-cuts and cuts. After the kitchen scene it cuts to Whitney in her room. She is looking at a photo and her hand is on the photo, the camera then tracks her hand back up to her face, then jumps back to the photo at a high angle shot, the camera did this to make her look small or as if it is a eye level shot.

Sound:At the beginning there is a radio playing in the kitchen which is meant to be non-diegetic, so we don’t really notice it but it breaks the silence and makes it more normal. We also hear the clang of pots and pans that Ricky is washing up in this scene this is all going on over a conversation. Bianca then goes upstairs to have a conversation with Whitney in her bedroom but before she enters her room there is a clip of Whitney by herself, we can hear the radio muffled downstairs playing a song and a train going by outside quietly. The next scene is in the street, we can hear chairs scraping across the pavement, bin bags being thrown on the street, generalchit-chat, a train going by and foot steps. It is also raining when the camera is filming the street, to make it look like it is really raining the rain has been emphisized so it is a really loud patter on the pavement.
